Insurance Covers Variety Of Storm Damage

COLUMBUS, Ohio — From downed trees down to leaky roofs, central Ohioans spent much of the day Wednesday surveying the damage.

Some of the damage is likely covered by your insurance policy, but not all of it, 10TV's Joanna Freeman reported.

Insurance agents said homeowners' first step should be contacting their insurance company to find out what they will have to pay for out of pocket.

"Most companies have 24-hour service, where (a customer) can call just to inquire to make sure that there is coverage or if there isn't coverage give a little advice about what's the best steps to take," said insurance agent Rachel Dean-Haas.

For homeowners dealing with interior damage from frozen pipes or ice dams, experts said the repair will probably be covered by your insurance policy.

But a downed tree in your yard with no other property damage is most likely not covered, which means many people have their work cut out for them.

"It I can get all the logs cleared out to open up the driveway so we can get the car out of the garage then that's as far as I'll go" said homeowner Aric Dewald. "And the tree service can come in because it's a little too tall for me, a little dangerous for me so I'll let the professional do that."

Dewald will have to pay for those professionals himself.

"Not much they can do because it didn't touch the house," Dewald said. "If my truck had been there they'd be here getting it fixed."

For vehicles that were hit by the winter blast, insurance agents said policies with comprehensive coverage should foot the bill for everything from falling tree limbs and branches to hail and wind damage.

And depending on your policy, you may even be able to be reimbursed for spoiled food.
