NATIONWIDE -- For drivers and auto insurance companies, these are anxious weeks.

It's mating season for deer, which means car crashes involving deer are way up.

Last year, Missouri had 300 reported crashes involving deer. Five people were killed and more than 300 people were injured.

Nationwide, deer collisions are up 21% over five years, with State Farm estimating nearly 2,000,000 annually.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says if a deer darts in front of your vehicle, hit the brakes but don't swerve to miss it because swerving can cause the car to flip or run off the road.
